Something Different... Little Girl

Little girl with the faraway eyes
Lost in the rolling tide of the sea,
The gentle waves that break on the sand,
And their hypnotising melody.

Your dress is threadbare with holes and your
Tired feet throb from walking all day.
Selling bread to ungrateful tourists
Who impatiently shoo you away.

I wish I knew where your thoughts went to,
As you stare into infinity.
Do you know what lies beyond the ocean;
Have you heard about people like me?

Who work in their air-conditioned rooms,
From 9 until 5 every day,
Complaining about how hard life is,
While planning trips and weekends away.

Your mother yells far in the distance;
Your long afternoon has just begun.
The light behind your eyes is turned off;
You know that there is no place to run.

I am so drawn to your hopeless eyes,
Little girl, and you will never know
That my heart burns with the image of
Your far-away face wherever I go.
